Immigration Minister Erica Stanford has announced that applications are now open for the new Parent Boost Visitor Visa, giving parents of New Zealand citizens and residents the chance to spend more time with their families.
This new visa allows multi-entry visits for up to five years, provided applicants meet certain health, financial, and insurance requirements. It sits alongside the existing General Visitor Visa and Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, but is designed to meet the growing demand for a longer-term option.
“Whether it’s being here for the arrival of a new grandchild, helping through health challenges, or providing childcare so parents can work, there is nothing quite like family support close by,” says Minister Stanford.
Why It Matters
The Parent Boost Visa has been developed to strike a balance: supporting families who want their parents nearby, while protecting New Zealand’s public services, particularly the health system.
It also strengthens New Zealand’s appeal as a destination for skilled migrants, who often weigh family support options when deciding where to settle.
The visa sits alongside other recent immigration updates, such as the introduction of smarter skilled migrant residency pathways, all part of the Government’s wider plan to attract talent, support businesses, and boost the economy.
Key Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for a Parent Boost Visa, applicants must:
- Have a sponsor who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
- Meet acceptable health and character requirements.
- Hold valid health insurance for the full duration of their stay (covering emergency care, cancer treatment, repatriation, and return of remains).
- Complete a new medical assessment and show maintained insurance while offshore in the third year of their visa.
In addition, applicants (or their sponsors) must meet one of the following financial requirements:
- Income: The sponsor earns at least the median wage (1.5x for joint sponsors).
- Ongoing income: Parents can demonstrate a steady income at least equal to NZ Superannuation rates.
- Savings: Parents have funds of at least $160,000 (single) or $250,000 (couple).
A Boost for Employers Too
Alongside this visa launch, the Government has also redesigned the Job Check process for employers using the Accredited Employer Work Visa scheme.
The new system, shaped by employer feedback, will make hiring faster and easier, ensuring businesses can fill skill shortages more efficiently.
Looking Ahead
The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is a key part of the Government’s commitment to creating an efficient, predictable immigration system—one that supports families, strengthens communities, and drives New Zealand’s economic growth.
